University And College Intensive English Programs

UCIEP Expands!

UCIEP has expanded beyond intensive English programs to English language programs. The organization will continue using its namesake acronym UCIEP going by UCIEP: University and College English Language Programs. UCIEP is also now offering a new Associate Membership type, which serves as an initial membership to provide support for university and college English language programs as they strive to achieve Full Member status by meeting all UCIEP guidelines. Community Colleges offering any four-year degrees will now be considered for UCIEP membership as well. With these changes, UCIEP is better positioned to be the industry leader for university and college-governed English language programs and serve as a resource for international partners and students. University and college English language programs in the United States and its territories can learn more about becoming a member here.

UCIEP: University and College English Language Program (UCIEP) consortium, founded in 1967, is perhaps the most influential and important organizations for English language education in higher education in the United States and its territories. The mission of UCIEP is to support program directors through collegial engagement, applied research, advocacy, and active promotion of the highest professional standards. UCIEP is highly regarded by many sponsored programs around the world that often select UCIEP institutions for hosting their scholarship recipients. UCIEP members are committed to ensuring that students receive the highest quality English language instruction from trained, professional teachers.

In recognition of the evolving nature of English language instruction, in 2023, UCIEP revised its membership bylaws to include more university and college English language programs and to further extend their goals of supporting English language programs in the United States. The revised membership bylaws describe an ELP as “any program that offers English language training to support the mission of their home university or college. Members must have a core English language program that meets the equivalent of full-time status (minimum of 9 graduate credit hours or 12 undergrad credit hours; or 18 non-credit contact hours per week)… English Language Programs include but are not limited to Intensive English programs, foundation or pathway programs, or courses/programs for matriculated students.

The first step to becoming a member is filling out the eligibility form here. The initial application for membership is easy, taking less than 20 minutes.
