About Us
The University of South Florida is a multi-campus, comprehensive, research university serving more than 43,000 students. USF is home to medical clinics and hospitals, a major mental health research institute, and four public broadcasting stations. It employs more than 1,860 full-time faculty. USF offers a wide variety of degree programs, including 77 baccalaureate, 87 master's, and 22 doctoral degree programs, as well as the M.D. Students may choose programs in Architecture, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health. Mission
The English Language Institute (ELI) has been teaching English as a Second Language to students from over 30 different countries since 1978. Its innovative academic skills-based curriculum teaches students to succeed in their university studies. The ELI offers its students exciting classes including test-preparation electives. The ELI at USF is also a teaching and research lab for the students in the M.A. program in Applied Linguistics and the Ph.D. program in Instructional Technology and Second Language Acquisition.
Location (about the region)
The University of South Florida is a comprehensive, metropolitan university serving the Tampa Bay area, a community of more than 2.5 million people. Tampa is one of the fastest growing cities in the southeastern United States. Tampa offers a little bit of everything to its visitors including exciting theme parks, breathtaking beaches, great shopping malls, and interesting museums. Session Length and Program Hours
Students attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon for 21 hours each week. We offer three session. Our spring and fall sessions last 14 weeks and our summer session lasts 13 weeks. We also offer a short-term program called the Mini-Institute in July. Students can attend the Mini-Institute either for 4 weeks or 6 weeks. The focus is on conversational English.
Levels
The ELI has five levels of instruction: I (false beginner), II (low intermediate), III (intermediate), IV (high intermediate), and V (advanced). All levels reflect an integrated-skills, content-based curriculum in which students work on all skills in each class and study subjects that are of interest and relevance to learners bound for university study in the United States. The Mini-Institute focuses on speaking skills.

On average, 10 to 15 students per class
Faculty Qualifications
The ELI hires instructors possessing or seeking graduate degrees in Applied Linguistics or a related field, ESL teaching experience, and a record of professional development and interest.
Students' Countries of Origin
Nearly 500 students annually representing more than 35 different countries are enrolled at the ELI. Approximately 30% are Asian, 20% are from Latin America, 35% are Middle Eastern, 10% come from Europe, and 5% come from Africa.
Credit Courses
Housing
Most ELI students live in nearby apartments off-campus. Housing is also available in The Edge at 42nd Street, a privately-owned dormitory across the street from the USF campus. There is plenty of on-campus housing, but students must indicate their desire to live on-campus early on.

Special Offerings
Students on tourist visas can join our program for one semester as part-time students. It is possible to study at the ELI for 7 weeks at the beginning of each term. There are plenty of activities outside of class planned each semester. We also offer an Conversations Partner program.
Estimated Costs
$3,555.00 includes tuition, health fee, and activities per 14-week session (Fall and Spring) and 13 week session in Summer Other expenses: $175-- books $400-- major medical health insurance $3,700-- housing and meals Application fee is $100.00 (non-refundable)
Conditional Admissions
USF will award Provisional Admission to international students who submit all required materials but have a low TOEFL or no TOEFL score. Such students will be fully admitted to USF after they have finished level V passed the CLEAR test and have completed all other requirements established by USF.
Admission/Transfer Advising
The ELI's student advisor is available to assist students who wish to apply to USF or to other U.S. universities. In addition to one-on-one advising, a special workshop on Applying to the University is offered every semester. The Institutional TOEFL is offered by the ELI once each semester.
How to Apply
Applicant must submit a completed application form and a bank draft in U.S. dollars drawn on a U.S. bank for the $100 non-refundable application fee. Students who need an I-20 for an F-1 student visa must submit a current (not more than 6 months old) bank statement or letter of financial support for the minimum sum of U.S. $8,000
