UCIEP: YOUR CONNECTION TO THE BEST ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMS IN THE U.S.

UCIEP is a consortium of intensive English programs governed by universities and colleges in the U.S. Formed in 1967 to establish standards for best practice where none had previously existed, UCIEP has, for the past forty two years, remained true to its mission to promote excellence in intensive English program administration, curriculum, and instruction; encourage and sponsor professional development; and advocate on behalf of member organizations and the field of English as a second language as a whole.

UCIEP 2008-2011 MEMBER PROFILE BOOK

All of you should have received a copy of our 2008-2011 Profile Book by now either at NAFSA 2009 in Los Angeles from the UCIEP booth or by mail. In addition to information on our wonderful organization, the individual member profiles contain contact information, program descriptions, session schedules, faculty qualifications, and student composition. ADVOCACY

UCIEP continues to take an active role in advocating for international students. Some of UCEIP’s current efforts include:

■ becoming more active on our own campuses by communicating with our legislative liaisons

■ continuing to collaborate with other organizations with similar missions & views (AAIEP & NAFSA) to develop position statements on matters pertinent to our field

■ continuing internal efforts to gather data across programs on issues pertinent to IEPS (enrollment trends, impacting issues, etc) While at Bandera, program directors participated in a conference call with a representative from the US Department of State and the Director of Student Exchange and Visitor Visa Program from the Department of Homeland Security. UCIEP continues to take an active role in advocating for international students.

UCIEP PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP AT NAFSA 2009

UCIEP’s pre-conference workshop at NAFSA 2009 “The Challenges and Rewards of Supervising Intensive English Program (IEP) Personnel,” was filled to capacity this past May. The presenter for this program was Dr. David Logan, Associate Professor at the University of Southern California and Associate Dean and Executive Director of Executive Development at the USC Marshall School of Business. In this animated and hands-on workshop participants learned both how to identify the cultural stage of IEP personnel, and also the best ways to help team members reach the next cultural stage. In doing so participants were truly able to tackle some of the thorniest problems faced in supervising IEP personnel. Many, many thanks go to Dr. Logan for taking the time to share his experience and expertise with all.
