UCIEP: YOUR CONNECTION TO THE BEST ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMS IN THE U.S.

UCIEP is a consortium of intensive English programs governed by universities and colleges in the U.S. Formed in 1967 to establish standards for best practice where none had previously existed, UCIEP has, for the past forty-three years, remained true to its mission to promote excellence in intensive English program administration, curriculum, and instruction; encourage and sponsor professional development; and advocate on behalf of member organizations and the field of English as a second language as a whole.

UCIEP 2008-2011 MEMBER DIGITAL PROFILE BOOK

All of you should have received a copy of our 2008-2011 Digital Profile Book either at NAFSA 2010 in Kansas City from the UCIEP booth or by mail.  This is a great resource for all UCIEP institutions and advisors.  In addition to information on our wonderful organization, the individual member profiles contain contact information, program descriptions, session schedules, faculty qualifications, and student composition. If you have not received a copy of the new digital profile, please contact Marlin Howard at howardm@indiana.edu.  A copy will be sent to you right away. You may also request a hard copy of the Profile Book by contacting Marlin Howard. Of course, you can always find updated membership information at www.uciep.org.

UCIEP 2010-2011 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Once again an experienced and dedicated group of directors is serving on the UCIEP Board of Directors. The Board of Directors for 2010-2011 is comprised of:

ADVOCACY

UCIEP continues to take an active role in advocating for international students. Some of UCEIP’s current efforts include:

  • becoming more active on our own campuses by communicating with our legislative liaisons
  • continuing to collaborate with other organizations with similar missions & views (AAIEP & NAFSA) to develop position statements on matters pertinent to our field
  • continuing internal efforts to gather data across programs on issues pertinent to IEPS (enrollment trends, impacting issues, etc)

UCIEP PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP AT NAFSA 2010

UCIEP’s pre-conference workshop at NAFSA 2010 “Basics of Intensive English Programs (IEP) Administration,” was filled to capacity this past May. The presenters for this program were IEP Directors:

  • Karen O’Neill, San Jose State University
  • Maureen Burke, University of Iowa
  • Gerard Anthony Krzic, Ohio University
  • Suzanne K. Panferov, University of Arizona

This workshop served as an orientation for professionals new to IEP administration.  Topics addressed included successful development of program objectives, stakeholder concerns, and contingency planning.  The participants learned:

  • How to develop the foundation for an effective strategic plan for the IEP
  • How to establish and maintain strong positive relationships with primary constituencies
  • How to prepare for potential problems

Many, many thanks go to these UCIEP Directors for taking the time to share their experience and expertise with all.

UCIEP WEBSITE UPDATES

Remember to check the UCIEP website at http://www.uciep.org for information about an individual program or about all UCIEP programs. You can see a quick list of all UCIEP members and by clicking on the UCIEP Member’s link, you can go directly to that Institution’s web page. In reviewing our individual member sites, you will find an amazing diversity in geography, structure and approach. Parents, sponsors, and students are sure to find among these programs one or more that match their preferences. The fact that the institutions are UCIEP members ensures that students will also find the language instruction, facilities, and supportive environment necessary to have a rich and rewarding educational experience! If you would like to find out how to become a UCIEP partner, email info@uciep.org. We're always looking for more partner organizations that offer an equal benefit to all UCIEP members.

UPCOMING UCIEP MEETINGS

The next UCIEP general meeting will be held at the UCIEP Conference February 10-13, 2011 in Bandera, Texas. Along with the general meeting, the conference will include sessions on professional development, advocacy, recruitment practices, immigration changes, and maintaining standards for university and college IEPs.
